9 August : Hollyhocks

I'm feeling bad about nagging the Hollyhocks now. This is a flower that needs a little time to get ready for the party. So Many Ruffles.

I have been away but now I am  back in the garden, ready for August. There will be much lounging, drinking wine and eating crostini. The garden could be more perfect in many ways but it is quiet and shady on a hot day and the sunny border is full of bright summer colours. Next year I hope it will be more polished but for now I am satisfied. A friend came to lunch the other day and said "It's like a secret garden!" which is exactly the effect I wanted to achieve. Even the Hollyhocks are cooperating.

  1. Just gorgeous! Hollyhocks are so lovely. And what a beautiful compliment your friend gave your garden.

  2. I'm not sure that this Hollyhocks and I are going to be best buddies - after waiting so long for it to flower I have just noticed that it has blown down in the wind today. I am gnashing my teeth.

  3. It's so FRILLY! Imagine all those folds neatly tucked into a bud waiting to surprise you. But how frustrating if it keels over as soon as it's revealed itself!

    1. I am afraid that it fell down in a dead faint as soon as it came out into the fresh air. I have strapped it to a cane and told it to pull itself together. No room for the work shy in this garden

  4. I wonder how the bees will get to the nectar through all those ruffles?
I am sure it will revive by being strapped to a cane, mine did a few years ago.

    1. I have no idea how the bees get in. Another thing to worry about!
