8 Jan : Routine

It is always hard getting back into a routine after Christmas and this year it has felt like trying to grab the reins of a runaway horse. I am not sure how many good habits can go astray in two weeks but I think I have achieved a personal record. One by one I am bringing them under control with strict rules : no mince pies after epiphany, less wine more water, no chocolate for breakfast, porridge is the way to salvation.

There is so much to look forward to this year and I want to be ready, not weighed down with bad habits. Bring on the vegetables, a sensible bed time and regular exercise. I have started walking again and yesterday, watching the sun set behind the trees, I realised that I relish the sense of well being this brings me. A road to Damascus of sorts.

  1. no chocolate for breakfast. bah humbug. and what about remaining mince pies. it would be wasteful to throw them away........ I do hope your porridge has cream and whisky in it....

    1. Just the thought of whisky in porridge makes me feel poorly!

  2. Looking forward to your year ahead reports from town and country. I have a few mince pies in the freezer. Will they be OK for next Christmas?

    1. No. You must eat them immediately to avoid a tragic mince pie situation in December 2016.

    1. I believe that you can make a very good Christmas pud ice cream so you are obviously getting ready for summer.

  4. Gorgeous photos. I, too, am full of good intentions and everything seemed so much more achievable today when the sun was shining. I agree about porridge.

    1. The sun makes such a difference although if we could have a little bit of well behaved snow I wouldn't complain.

  5. Oh yes, you can't beat a good sunset. We saw a painterly one at Polesden yesterday and a golden one today leaving Canterbury. Another early start and busy day tomorrow (mire cottage renovation decision making) so I will heed your advice for a sensible bedtime.

    1. I am all agog to hear about the decision making at the cottage. Please don't be shy of sharing all the details. I am in the middle of thinking about curtains for the kitchen - it is a delightful place to be.

  6. Your Christmas entertainment is far different from mine - no mince pies, no chocolate. There was toast and Marmite - oh, and toast and marmalade (just once).

    1. You are a model for us all. An annual dose of marmalade is all that is required to maintain your vitamin C levels and ward off things that go bump in the night.

  7. I have grown to love this pure winter light, even when its receding behind the horizon or a stand of trees. These images are beautiful. My healthy regime is yet to kick in I'm afraid *hides brioche crumbs and rococo wrappers*. I do hope you're well Alice xx

    1. Thank you - I am very well and full of projects and plans for 2016! Unfortunately my weakness is hot buttered toast which is very hard to give up in cold weather but I shall persevere. I am sure I will learn to love spinach eventually.

  8. I agree with all of this. My return to virtue was delayed by the need to make all the Christmas cookies after New Years because of being away or too busy at the more appropriate time. But they are all eaten, now. Bring on the kale.
