15 June : Meadow

Today is the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta in the river meadows at Runnymede near Windsor. These photos were taken in the heart of Devon last weekend, meadows sleepy with the smell of hay and the flickering buzz of insects in the long grass. The breed of cows is a relatively recent import and the fields would have been smaller but perhaps these meadows are not so very different to the meadows of medieval England.

    1. Thank you! Make yourself comfortable - there are more than enough cushions to go around.

  2. These photos are English countryside at its best which I doubt has changed a lot over the centuries - let's hope it stays that way.

    1. I have been driving a lot this year and enjoying great swathes of landscape, watching the trees come into leaf and the crops grow but it is the small intimate spaces that I love - a clump of trees, a river pool, a tiny footpath and these are definitely unchanged over the centuries which makes them very precious.

  3. Alice...visiting with you here is like reading an Elizabeth Goudge novel...beautiful peaceful descriptive language. With the added bonus of lovely photos.

    1. Thank you! I have always loved Elizabeth Goudge and her evocation of the English countryside so those are kind words indeed.

  4. Isn't the Shire looking gorgeous at the moment. It's a sight we never take for granted, breathtaking on these summer evenings, and barely a week before the evenings start to turn, can hardly believe we are at mid-summer already.

    1. My midsummer rose is in full bloom but it has been too cold for Pimms yet. Fingers crossed for a lovely evening this week.

    1. I'm sending you some sunshine. It may take a couple of hours to reach the coast but that is just enough time to pack up a picnic and find your sunhat. Get busy!
