9 Feb : MrM, Chef

Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Arthur Rackham

New York: Macmillan Company, 1918

MrM is preparing Bircher muesli for breakfast. It is his signature recipe. MrsM passes him the organic jumbo oats, cold pressed apple juice and filtered water. The best apple in the fruit bowl is carefully grated and combined with delicious creamy natural yogurt. This is not artisan cooking, it is a work of art.

Finally he turns to the spice bottles and adds a pinch of this, a smidgin of that.

"Oh ..." says MrM "...I've added cumin instead of cinnamon...do you think it will make a difference?"

  1. Ha ha. Oh dear. My husband put pine nuts into our home-made muesli - not nice.

    1. Pine-nuts are known as Hamster Food here because our last hamster adored them.

  2. this is where I am reminded that MrsM confessed to me that she did not know which way round a 4-4-2 formation is in football. We all have gaps in our knowledge

    1. It is a small step up from toast but a long way from snail flavoured ice cream so closer to Nigel than Heston.

  4. Oh dear! But I can talk, glasses are now essential in the kitchen. Did the birds like it I wonder?

    1. I needed glasses to read a recipe the other day. How did that happen?

  5. I love pinenuts!
And cumin - what did the muesli taste like? A bit spicy, nutty - probably quite good? I'm tempted to try next time, but I make a dry batch for a few weeks.

    1. Just no. Do not do it to yourself. Curried muesli is not the best way to start the day.

  6. That is how the best recipes are developed... Or not as the case may be. You have reminded me of a wonderful Arthur Rackham exhibition I saw in Bristol many years ago.

    1. I didn't think even the birds would want curried muesli.

  7. I love pinenuts too Diana but not in muesli. They're too savoury.
